The property technology (PropTech) sector has grown quickly over the last decade, changing the way estate agents, landlords, and tenants use property management systems. However, gender diversity still remains an issue. While progress has been made, the property technology industry is mostly male-dominated, which limits opportunities for women and slows down innovation.

In this blog, we’ll explore the challenges women face in the property technology industry and how inclusivity can lead to better business results for estate agencies.

The Current State of Female Representation in Property Technology

Barriers to Female Advancement in Property Software

1. Industry Perception & Workplace Culture

Men have traditionally been seen as the main decision-makers in property deals, while women were expected to handle administrative or supportive tasks. These outdated perceptions still affect hiring, promotion, and leadership opportunities in property software today. Many property software companies still do not have fully inclusive workplaces, making it harder for women to advance in their careers.

2. Lack of Female Role Models & Mentorship

Few women hold leadership roles in property software. Without role models, it is difficult for other women to see themselves succeeding in the field.

“Technology evolves when perspectives do. More women in property software means smarter solutions and a stronger industry.”

3. Work-Life Balance

For many women, balancing work with family and caregiving responsibilities remains a challenge. The property sector often requires long hours and frequent travel, which can be tough for female estate agents with family commitments.

While remote work and flexible hours are becoming more common, they are not yet the standard. This means that women may feel forced to choose between advancing in their careers and fulfilling family responsibilities.

How More Women in PropTech Benefits Estate Agents

1. Inclusive Teams Create Smarter Solutions

Women bring different perspectives, making property management software more user-friendly for estate agents, landlords, and tenants. Diverse perspectives help create software that solves real-world challenges more effectively.

“Women in PropTech are increasingly making a significant impact by not only challenging the status quo but also introducing fresh ideas that cater to a broader spectrum of needs in residential estate agency.”

Victoria Leger, Executive Assistant to the Directors at Veco

2. Stronger Collaboration & Productivity

A supportive, inclusive work culture helps property professionals feel valued and motivated to contribute their best work. This leads to happier employees, higher productivity, and better business success.

3. Better Customer Understanding & Service

Many property owners, investors, landlords, and tenants are women. A more diverse workforce ensures that estate agent CRM systems meet the needs of a broader client base, improving service delivery and customer satisfaction.

“Diversity in property technology isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for smarter, fairer, and more efficient solutions.”

Alice Mortimer, Business Development Manager

How Can the Property Industry Improve Gender Representation?

To create a more diverse and inclusive industry, action needs to be taken at multiple levels. Here’s how:

1. Mentorship Programs: Establish structured mentorship programs where women in leadership positions guide and support other women working in property.

2. Flexible & Family-Friendly Policies: Introduce hybrid working options, parental leave policies, and part-time roles to help retain talented women in the sector.

3. Unconscious Bias Training: Train your teams to recognise and challenge bias in hiring and promotions. This includes removing gendered language from job descriptions and challenging traditional stereotypes.

“It is really important to me as a PropTech company to create a collaborative and inclusive culture which is supportive and empowering for women.

The tech industry allows flexibility to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It also encompasses a wide range of roles, from software development and data analysis to marketing and customer service. This diversity allows us to employ women with various skills and interests.”

Nicola Murray, HR Director at Veco

4. Encouraging More Women to Enter the Sector: Engage with universities, colleges, and female-led networks to attract more women into property careers. Running outreach programs and apprenticeships can help build a strong pipeline of future female leaders.
